East Finchley North London garden designer

East Finchley

Based in East Finchley in north London this newly renovated Edwardian semi detached house had just bare soil, new fences and a new patio for a garden. The client had developed the interior in a contemporary style sympathetic to the period of the house and now wanted to consider the outside space.

The brief was to create a vibrant low maintenance space which could be regularly used by the client for relaxation and four grandchildren to have fun in. The art loving client had a handful of abstract sculptures he wanted to include in the design. A water feature was also required to mask the sound of an extractor fan of an adjacent fast food outlet.

An existing retaining wall was not square to the garden but rather than fight it we decided to embrace it and to have fun with angles!  This playing with the angles also served to make better use of the narrow plot.

The existing new patio of pink tumbled blocks, usually found on a driveway were deemed attractive enough to be retained and repeated in the design.  Boundary fences were painted a mid grey to provide an excellent backdrop for foliage!  A struggling Camellia and Apple tree were removed and all that remained in the garden was a concrete pad which provided the base for the new shed which was painted an attractive lush green.

Two zero maintenance artificial lawns were laid on two different levels and edged in grey painted wood matching the fences.  A small buff coloured sandstone patio was laid in front of the shed, room enough for a small table and chairs.  Adjacent to the patio a small cascade water feature was installed with a bespoke mosaic tiled backdrop.

Water and electricity services were run in to the water feature to provide a tap, irrigation system and a mains point for the water pump and extra socket.

Sculptures were added to the beds where cottage style planting was added on the sunny side of the garden.  Shade and partial shade lovers were installed on the shady side with a handful of plants fulfilling both requirements to aid unity of the garden.
