Set in a quiet cul-de-sac north of the city of Cambridge this 1990’s townhouse originally came with a tight plot for a back garden. It then became smaller still when my client’s brand new contemporary extension took up a quarter of the garden. A busy young family of four were looking for a low maintenance contemporary design that complemented their new kitchen extension and maximised the garden space now available.
Living in such a quiet and small road meant the children were able to make use of the front garden and surrounding communal area for play. This in turn meant that the design for the garden could be given over to a more grown up entertaining and relaxing space.
The patchy lawn was waved goodbye and given over to hardscaping in the form of composite decking and tiles which matched exactly the tiles of the kitchen floor. The whole of the outside level was flush with the inside level making a seamless transition to the outside once the bi-fold doors were fully opened up.
Raised sleeper beds were remodelled to provide plenty of space for planting which were soon brimming with lush foliage.
The composite decking was formed into a wide path giving some flow and feeling of movement within the otherwise static design and in doing so created the two tiled patios of the garden.
Horizontal slatted fencing was installed on three sides. An automatic irrigation system was added to the raised beds and an outside power point was installed with a view to powering lap tops etc for home working and recreation.
