Melbourn

Set in a gated drive in Melbourn in south Cambridgeshire, this generously sized front garden had the tired remnants of its original landscaping from the 2006 house build.

The brief was to include some naturalistic paths echoing the earlier build by The Green Lounge in the much smaller area of the front garden on the opposite side of the drive.  Also to modernise the overall look and feel and to add a main access path, additional car parking area and remodelling of the lawn.

These latter three areas formed the strong ground pattern for the plot, in counterpoint to the natural paths.  The wide access path, which linked the drive to the front door and the circular car area were laid with light buff coloured sandstone slabs and setts respectively. The use of this light coloured stone lifted the shady mood of the front of the house and linked with the light grey woodwork and the brickwork of the property.

The lawn was completely reshaped into three interlocking rectangles edged in metal.

The naturalistic path meandered along the front of the house linking the two access points to the back garden at each end.  A new horizontal fence and gate was added at one end.  The path was laid to Breedon gravel, an amber coloured self binding aggregate, and again edged in metal.
